Care planning basics
The 6 everyday activities that decide when someone needs help
Doctors, insurers and care planners all use the same yardstick to measure independence: the six activities of daily living, or ADLs.
Bathing. Dressing. Eating. Toileting. Transferring (getting in and out of a bed or chair). Continence.
When someone can't do two or more of these safely on their own, they usually need ongoing help, and that's often what qualifies a person for long-term care benefits. Knowing the list makes it easier to notice changes early and describe them clearly to a doctor.
